Top 10 Worst Hurricanes in World History (by scienceray.com
The top 10 Worst Hurricanes to ever be recorded since the 1700’s.
The 1922 Swatow Typhoon
The Swatow Typhoon was first spotted July 27 near the Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The typhoon moved slowly north as it intensified. On July 31, it entered the South China Sea, crossing over northern Luzon. Late August 2, the typhoon hit the Chinese city of Swatow with the winds blowing at 100mph. The water levels as the storm hit were 12ft above normal and left the land saturated with water many days after. Nearly 50,000 people were taken as the storm swept over Swatow. Ships were blown as far as 2 miles north and many other ships were destroyed. The total death toll was around 60,000 people. This typhoon was one of the deadliest typhoons in the northern Pacific Ocean, but not near the top of our list.
The 1882 Bombay Cyclone
about this deadly hurricane, we know that the death toll was around 100,000. The hurricane hit near Bombay, India on June 6, 1882.
The 1991 Bangladesh Cyclone
On the night of April 29, 1991, the southern part of Bangladesh, Chittagong, was hit my a powerful Cyclone. The cyclone first started in the Bay of Bengal and moved northwest, slowly increasing its size and strength. The storm was then moved between a high pressure area and began to moved northeastward, toward Bangladesh. The cyclone continued to intensify, as wind speeds reached 160 mph. Chittagong was then hit by a 155mph cyclone, a class 4 hurricane, on April 29, 1991. At least 138,000 people died in the storm, with most of the deaths in the southern part of Bangladesh. Most of the people drowned, including children and the elderly. The storm caused over $1.5 Billion dollars in damage to the surrounding areas. But even this hurricane cannot compare to what comes up next.
The 2008 Nargis Cyclone
On May 2, 2008, the worst natural disaster struck Bruma. In the Bay of Bengal, a storm was brewing. On April 28, meteorologists had classified this tropical storm as a hurricane. During that time, Nirgis had come to a stand-still, about 500 miles off the cost of India. The cyclone began to head north, as meteorologists had determined that Nargis would hit Bangladesh or India. The hurricane then began to move east, and on May 1, Nargis began to greatly intensify. On May 2, records show that the hurricane had wind speeds of nearly 215km/h, nearly 133mph. The cyclone then hit Bruma, and slowly disintegrated as it moved inward. The UN (United Nations) estimated that over 1.5 million people were affected by this storm just in Bruma. Almost 60,000 people were injured and about 78,000 people dead.
The 1867 Great Backerganj Cyclone
This cyclone formed, again, over the Bay of Bengal, and continued to move north-northwest. The maximum wind speed recorded was over 220km/h (or 136mph) and the biggest surge (wave) was over 13 meters (45 feet). This cyclone killed around 200,000 people and the property damage was massive. The storm also caused famine and epidemic.
The 1975 Super Typhoon Nina
the “Super” Typhoon Nina was one of the largest recorded typhoons in history. It is second on the deadliest hurricanes in the Pacific. The storm began in the Philippine Sea on July 29 and began to move southwestward, away from land. On July 31, Nina began to move northwestward, into China. On August 1, wind speeds were at 150mph and still growing. August 2 was the highest recorded wind speed at 155mph. The typhoon landed near Taiwan. The storm weakened as it barreled through mountain ranges, missing most of the major cities in Asia. The deaths were reaching far and beyond 100,000, but no exact recording is found. The destruction caused $1.2 Billion dollars in damage. The typhoon also caused 62 dams to fail and massive temporary lakes to form.
Half-way there! but not the most powerful.
The 1737 Calcutta Cyclone
Since this cyclone happened so early in time, no much is recorded or known about this cyclone. meteorologists can only guess at how this storm was formed and the damage it caused. This cyclone hit Calcutta, India on October 7, 1737. The storm killed over 300,000 people and destroyed over 20,000 ships. Please note that Calcutta only had a population of around 20,000 when this storm hit.
The 1881 Haiphong Typhoon
This storm was the most powerful storm of the Pacific. Even that is not the greatest hurricane of all. This cyclone hit Vietnam on September 15, 1881. 300,000 people died in Vietnam and surrounding areas. The collateral damage was enormous. Still, little is know about this hurricane and the power that it produced.
The 1839 Indian Cyclone
On November 25, 1839 a huge cyclone hit Coringa, India with a 40ft storm surge and killed 300,000 people. The entire city was destroyed by this wave and the city was then never rebuilt. Over 20,000 sea vessels were completely destroyed.
Number 1 top 10 deadliest Hurricane of all time.
The 1970 Bhola Cyclone
This storm was actually formed from the remaining pieces of another tropical storm. Tropical Storm Nora lasted for two days in the South China Sea and moved west over the Malay Peninsula. The remnants of the tropical storm were in the development of a new cyclone in the Bay of Bengal on November 8, 1970. As the storm moved slowly north, the cyclone intensified. The cyclone reached its peak as it moved slowly northeast. The winds were topped out as 185km/h (115mhp). On November 12, the cyclone hit East Pakistan and continued north. The storm was weakening, but was still considered a cyclone 100km from the shoreline. A staggering 300,000-500,000 people lost their lives in this massive storm. In India, a 5,500-ton freighter was sunk by the massive amounts of rain caused by the cyclone. East Pakistan lost over $65 million worth of crops and cattle, 85% of the homes were destroyed, and in total, over $86.4 million were caused by this storm.
Even though most of these natural disasters happened in the past, I am sure that a new top 10 Hurricanes will be made in the future. I hope you enjoyed this article and please, do not mess with these massive beasts.
